Owl Totem: Animal Totem

Owl Totem

For obvious reasons, since my name is Fern Owl, I have a strong affinity for the owl totem and chose it to be the first animal totem I wrote on. My name was given to me many years ago. The owl part came to me from a family friend (Cherokee) who always called me “Little Owl” because at a very young age, I showed wisdom well beyond my years. The fern part of my name came to me much later when it became obvious I was to be a teacher. The fern was a natural choice since one of its aspects is as a teacher. So the two together mean “Wise Teacher”.

The owl is often thought of as almost a night time version of the eagle. It is the ruler of the night, able to see into people and places where others can not see, for it has the ability to move stealthily toward its destination and freeze at a blink of the eye to prevent others from seeing it.

Their wings are much larger than their bodies and have special feathers on the edges that cause their wings to move silently, allowing them to sneak up on their target.

The Owl Totem represents wisdom and foresight. Those who walk in the essence of the owl totem are known to know when deception is at hand. The understand how and why others do the things they do and can accept the problems and mistakes other make as “just being human” rather than seeing them as a problem, or lack within the person.

The owl knows how and when to wait for the right time and place to handle a situation. She can quietly wait, standing in the shadows studying to situation from all angles. Never making a move until the right time.

In many cultures, owls are known as the seer of souls and the keeper of secrets. The owl has been shown in myths to accompany newly departed souls to the underworld, allowing them to fly freely from their material world to the realm to spirit.

The owl is often the totem of those with strong psychic and clairvoyant abilities as it helps you to see that which can not be seen and know that which can not be known. Those strongly connected to an owl totem tend to prefer the night and can spot those who exhibit a tendency to cause harm more readily than most others, so you should always listen when someone with an owl totem warns you of someone intentions.

What secret does the owl want to teach you? What knowledge does she want to share? Listen for her message for the secrets she has to tell you may hold the key to a mystery from your past, present or future.
